Synopsis - Coriolanus
The play is largely based on the Life of Coriolanus as
described in Plutarch's 'Lives of the Noble Greeks and
Romans' and Livy's 'Ab Urbe Condita'. The tragic
hero is Caius Martius Coriolanus, a Roman soldier.
Caius Martius is a Roman General who shows contempt for the
normal people and ridicules them during a riot in Rome, which
started due to a lack of grains, that were withheld by the
authorities. He manages to win the siege of the Volscian city
of Corioles and takes the city for Rome. In recognition of his
bravery during this battle, Cominius, his commander, gives
Martius the surname of 'Coriolanus'.
Back in Rome he runs for Consul, pushed by his mothers
ambitions. Although it looks good to start with (the Senate
approves his candidature), his earlier contempt for the normal
people falls back on him and he runs into opposition. He starts
once more a tirade against the popular rule. As a result he is
banished from Rome
Coriolanus now turns to Aufidius the leader of the Volscians
and offers to lead their army against Rome. In Rome panic
rises, and they try to persuade Coriolanus to stop his crusade
for vengeance. Only when his mother Volumnia and his own wife
and child are sent to meet with him, they succeed and are able
to dissuade Coriolanus from destroying Rome. After Coriolanus
returns to the Volscian capital, he is killed for his
betrayal.
