Shakespeare is one of the big writers in the English culture.
You will enjoy listening to this great literature classic:
Cymbeline - Synopsis
Cymbeline belongs to the group of plays named the
'Shakespeare's Late Romances' along with Pericles,
Prince of Tyre, The Tempest, and The Winter's
Tale. Although it was grouped with the tragedies in the
First Folio, today it is more often counted with the comedies.
King Cymbeline, the main character of the play, is based on a
British chieftain, Cunobelinus, who reigned before the time of
the Roman invasion.
The plot is very convoluted: Posthumus has secretly married
Imogen, daughter of King Cymbeline, as a result, Cymbeline
banishes Posthumus from the kingdom. Iachimo, a soldier in the
Roman army, makes a bet with Posthumus that he can tempt Imogen
to be unfaithful. Imogen learns of this bet and fakes her death
and flees to Milford Haven on the West Coast of Britain, where
she makes friends with two men, who are her brothers (she knows
nothing of them and they don't know they are sons of Cymbeline,
as they were kidnapped by Belarius when they were very young).
At the end everything starts to fall into place, as usual with
Shakespeare and the complicated plot is resolved in a happy
ending:
Cymbeline makes a speech to the gods and declares peace and
friendship between Britain and Rome: "Never was a war did
cease, Ere bloody hands were washed, with such a
peace."

This is the first new, full-scale edition of Cymbeline
in 37 years. One of Shakespeare's final works, Cymbeline
uses virtuoso theatrical and poetic means to dramatize a
story of marriage imperiled by mistrust and painfully
rebuilt in the context of international conflict.
Roger Warren's commentary emphasizes the play's
theatrical impact and pays close attention to its complex,
evocative language.
