Hamlet - Synopsis
The play is about the young Prince Hamlet whose father, the
King of Denmark, has recently died. His uncle, Claudius, takes
over the throne and marries, Gertrude, the widow. Hamlet is
very unhappy about Claudius' action.
A ghost, apparently the deceased king, appears and tells
Hamlet that Claudius had actually murdered the king, and asks
Hamlet to avenge this death. Hamlet plots to confirm Claudius’s
guilt by feigning madness.
Hamlet's plan to uncover Claudius’s guilt is to stage a play
reenacting the murder. Claudius interrupts the play midway
through and leaves the room. After some hesitation, he thinks
to have Claudius in front of him behind a curtain and stabs the
body, only to find that he had stabbed the wrong man:
Polonius.
Claudius deports Hamlet to England, but the ship is held up
and he return to Denmark.
The son of Polonius (Laertes) returns from France enraged.
Claudius, realizing in Laertes an opportunity to get rid of
Hamlet, sets up a fencing match between the two. The fight is a
setup; Laertes’ blade is poisoned, as is the wine in a goblet
from which Hamlet will drink.
During the bout, Gertrude (Hamlet's mother) drinks from the
poisoned goblet and dies. Laertes succeeds in cutting Hamlet,
then is cut by his own blade. With his dying breath, he reveals
the king’s plot to kill Hamlet. Hamlet manages to kill Claudius
before he too succumbs to the fatal poison.

Shakespeare. Since I 923, when the newly formed company

and producers have honed and perfected the craft of making
Shakespeare to be heard.
Those decades of experience come to fruition in this
production. The intimacy of radio gives full rein to the
power of Shakespeare's language, taking the listener into
the very centre of Hamlet's emotional and moral
turmoil.
The play is introduced by Richard Eyre, former Director
of the Royal National Theatre, and the accompanying booklet

analysis, brief biographies of the leading actors and of
Shakespeare himself, as well as an essay from the producer
